Welcome to DCH Writing, your next new pop culture writing destination. I’m Derek, your host for this corner of the Internet.
Here’s what you can expect to see on this blog.
Pop Culture Topics
I’m a big fan of different kinds of media from print novels to graphic novels, page to screen, live-action to animation, video games to tabletop games. I like looking at characters and settings, and the stories that people tell with them. So, going from that there will be reviews of different media, especially independent or underrated works that could use the attention, as well as feature articles of different topics related to media.
Reviews
Regarding reviews, I’m going to be analyzing different features in pop culture media, meaning anything including video games, web series, movies, comics, etc. I’ll be analyzing them in terms of the story, visuals, audio, gameplay for video games, and at the end, I’ll give the media a final score to use as a quick reference between 1 and 5. Here’s a quick breakdown on what each score means.
One out of five is something that’s just a complete mess on every level. Don’t waste your time on this. You’ll wonder why the people making it wasted their time on this.
Two out of five is something that fails on almost every level, but there’s something about it that gives it at least a little bit of a redeeming factor.
Three out of five means it’s one of three things. It’s either A) a just about equal mix of good and bad elements, B) something with a great concept that’s poorly executed, or C) something that works functionally but is either uninteresting or unoriginal.
Four out of five means something is mostly well-made but either has significant problems or would only really appeal to certain niche audiences.
Five out of five is something that, whatever flaws it may have, still presents an amazing piece of entertainment for whoever looks into it. If it fits your interests, it’s something that can’t be missed.
Basically, 5 means it’s great, 4 means it’s good, 3 means it’s mid, 2 means it’s bad, and 1 means it’s awful.
Writing & Story Telling
I’m not just a story appreciator; I’m also a storywriter myself. I have a number of story ideas in the works that I’m trying to form into full stories, both short and long. So, you’ll be seeing some of the short stories that I work on as well as pieces of the longer stories. I’ll also be posting articles with details about the characters I make, insights into my creative process, and strategies that might work for your own approach to creative writing, if you’re so inclined.
And speaking of stories…
DCH-Verse Stories
I’ve already begun publishing my own stories. The first of them, the science fantasy action novel Hype Beach, is already available in a format where people can purchase, acquire, and read them, and with any luck, this is only the first of many. As my stories become available after completion, I’ll provide details about them, including where you can find them, who they might appeal to, and what kinds of things you can expect from them.
That’s it for our introduction. Thank you for your support and I hope to see you here more in the future!
